Still Going Strong

Hard to believe, but we’re back to the future.  2015 is here. You may not have a flying DeLorean (yet), but if you have a solid IT toolkit, you’re good to go for the new year.

Those tools include the old stand-bys: Java, .Net, Python, and Ruby on Rails. Development jobs using those tools remain the most common on the market. Developers with crossover skills and business acumen are in even greater demand.

Then there’s UX and UI. We won’t get into a long discourse about the difference. Suffice it to say that every company wants to make its systems user friendly. Both are necessary and both UX and UI designers will remain in high demand for 2015.

Website creation and management also remain a perennial source of employment for professionals with PHP and Perl. Even plain old CSS and HTML expertise are useful, with front-end jobs still good opportunities.

Of course, security is on everyone’s mind, given the latest SONY hack. Even the Feds are looking for ethical hackers to keep the bad guys at bay.

Other in-demand tech careers include DB administrator, systems engineer, software engineer, big data analyst, games developer, and IT manager. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a tech job that wasn’t a safe career bet.

As for hiring prospects, 2015 looks like it will be a great year for permanent positions. November was a stellar month for IT jobs, according to the US Department of Labor Statistics, and experts believe the trend will continue, with companies hiring more permanent employees rather than only short-term contract workers.

So fire up the flux capacitor (you can probably get one at thinkgeek.com) and prepare for a solid future.
