Dreaming of a big salary raise? Dream on.

It’s time for your annual review. It’s bound to go well. How could it not? You spearheaded a major re-engineering of your company’s database, which increased efficiency in all departments. You know you’re getting a substantial raise.

Dream on.

According to a recent survey from Janco Associates, a management consulting firm, salaries for IT professionals will increase only slightly in 2013. Over the last 12 months, IT salaries rose only 1.98 percent overall. The increase was more in mid-sized companies (up 2.3%) and less in large enterprises (up only 1.61%).

How do those gains translate into dollars and cents? Overall, the average IT professional saw his salary increase from $77,773 to $79,312 in the last 12 months. IT execs and CIOs saw slightly higher increases, mostly in mid-sized companies.

So salaries may not be increasing by much, but they are increasing. That’s good news. Furthermore, the Janco survey also indicated that outsourcing is on the decline. More and more companies are bringing their IT operations under direct control. Help desks and data center operations are being moved in-house.  That means more IT jobs.

A big raise may be a dream right now. But wait. There could be more….
