Want a remote job? Think IT

Lousy weather. Sick kids. Traffic jams. No clean clothes. There are lots of reasons that working remotely holds so much appeal for so many people.

In fact, the number of people working remotely has increased by a whopping 159 percent since 2005.

So what’s the best way to ensure you can join the growing ranks of remote workers?

Get a job in IT.

According to FlexJobs, which looked at 54,000 companies, IT and computer-related jobs rank at the top of the list when it comes to working remotely. The most popular remote jobs are IT analyst, software developer, application architect, and software engineer.

Companies that top the list of allowing remote work include Appen, LiveOps, TTEC, Dell, and SAP. While many of these companies have a long history of facilitating remote work, other companies are just beginning to realize the benefits: access to a larger talent pool, stronger retention rates, higher productivity, and cost savings.

Other occupations that are also seeing an increase in remote work opportunities include education, sales, and customer service. But IT remains the hands-down leader.

So if you want to be a fire fighter, an EMT, or a TV news anchor person, you probably won’t be able to work remotely. But get a tech job and you can pretty much design your work environment with many companies.

Pajamas anyone?
