When’s the last time you changed jobs?

If you’re like many IT professionals, it wasn’t too long ago. And it won’t be long before you’re shopping and shifting again.

According to LinkedIn’s data on half-a-billion professionals, the tech industry has the highest employee turnover rate — 13.2% — of any business sector. That turnover, experts say, is fueling the talent shortage problem in IT. Companies can find and hire IT professionals, but they can’t seem to keep them.

What’s fueling the high turnover? LinedIn wanted to find out, so they surveyed over 10,000 people who recently changed jobs to see why they left. Here are the top responses:

  1. Lack of opportunity for advancement.
  2. Poor management.
  3. Unsatisfactory work environment or corporate culture.
  4. Lack of challenge in the work.
  5. Too little pay.
  6. Poor benefits.
  7. No recognition for work accomplishments.

Most of these issues are fairly easy to correct. And given the intense competition for IT talent in America, companies need to take turnover seriously and begin to address these problems. Because we all want to attract – and keep! – the best talent.
