Computer Science Spans Careers

Computer literacy, rather like reading and writing, is a skill useful in all careers these days.

Case in point: Peter M. Small, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Hyfe Inc.

An expert in infectious diseases, epidemiology, and global health, Dr. Small is known for his innovative approach to health care. In a recent article in Communications of the ACM, Small credits computer technology for some his accomplishments.  He noted that the willingness to work across disciplines led him to the world of computing. Over the decades it’s come to play a prominent role in so many aspects of his work and life.

Dr. Small’s work experience has led him to strongly promote computer science education or all professionals. He noted, “Having a strong background in computer science can prepare you for a wide range of careers, including those in medicine, healthcare and biotech. No matter where you end up, or what accomplishments you have throughout your career, the world of computing will likely play a prominent role in many aspects of your work and life. As computers continue to become more powerful, new opportunities will open up. And the expanding field of AI and machine learning is now advancing various aspects of the practice of medicine. By focusing on timely and significant issues, you will be best positioned to deploy innovative technological solutions in order to make a significant impact on society.”

So even if you have no desire to sit in a cubicle and write code, invest in some computer education. Like Dr. Small, you have no idea where it might lead you.
