Health care and IT

Looking for a healthy career in IT? Consider the health care industry.

According to a recent survey conducted by HealthITJobs.com, the health care industry is a booming market for technology professionals looking for career advancement, good benefits, and solid perks.

Those perks are some of the best in business today. About 86% of IT professionals in the health care industry are offered health insurance; 75% have 401(k) plans. About seven in 10 get life and disability insurance, while two-thirds have flexible spending accounts. Some IT pros even get childcare in the office.

While the 700 survey respondents reported being happy with their career choice, they also indicated that there are downfalls. The biggest problem in the health care industry is heavy medical regulation and the politics of health care.  The workload can be demanding, and with hacking of medical facilities becoming the latest technology crime of choice, security is a big issue.  And despite the admittedly good perks, many health care IT pros would like to see more flexible schedules, the opportunity to work from home, and overtime pay.

Drawbacks aside, job satisfaction in IT health care is high. And nearly 90 percent of IT health care pros would recommend the career to young techies just starting out.

But just so you know, as the industry currently stands, IT professionals in health care are unlikely to make a six figure income. Hey, nothing’s perfect.
