Okay, you know how to create apps for mobile devices. You can write code like mad. And you’re always up to date on the latest and greatest technology craze. So what more do you need to land a great, high-paying, secure job?
Soft skills.
The experts have been saying it for years, and a recent survey of IT managers by Computerworld confirms that recruiters are looking for techies who also have good communication and customer service skills, an understanding of how to behave professionally, and – get this – business savvy.
That’s right, the most sought-after IT professionals also understand accounts receivable, logistics, operations, and marketing.
Why? Good question. The answer is pretty simple. IT professionals who understand business know how best to integrate technology with a company’s entire enterprise system. In most big corporations, the top IT people are expected to develop applications to facilitate the work done by other departments. In order to do that, they have to understand how those departments work and how they fit into a company’s entire business structure.
Clearly, computer science departments need to step up and incorporate business courses into their curricula. Or create an app for that.
