Job Security in the Cloud

Okay, by now pretty much all IT mavens predict that cloud computing is here to stay. Even the Federal Government is adopting cloud computing as a way to save money and modernize services.

So what’s the downside? Well, other than obvious concerns about security, many experts predict that cloud computing will cost IT jobs.

Not so, according to a survey of IT professionals and analysts conducted at the recent Cloud Leadership Forum. When asked if they thought that the majority of IT jobs will no longer exist as currently defined by the year 2015, 64 percent of survey participants said no.

While IT professionals probably won’t lose their jobs, they will want to redefine themselves as the go-to people for converting enterprise IT infrastructures into private clouds. And they should be prepared to provide cloud services for end users and business partners, experts say. After all, in the world of information technology, change has always been the name of the game.

Despite the fairly rosy job outlook, participants at the Cloud Leadership Forum did express concerns about security. Some 77 of survey participants agreed that “by 2013, there will have been numerous major public cloud failures and/or security breaches.” Ouch. Let’s hope the Federal Government plans to employ a secure cloud.
