More Big Data from Big Government

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) (known as the National Bureau of Standards between 1901 and 1988) has formed a Big Data group with representatives from the business and academic worlds to spark innovation, fuel commerce, and drive progress.

NIST Big Data Working Group (NBD-WG) held its first meeting, via teleconferencing, on June 19.  In its meeting announcement, the group observed, “The availability of vast data resource s carries the potential to answer questions previously out of reach… However, the rate at which data volumes, speeds, and complexity are growing is outpacing scientific and technological advances in data analytics, management, transport, and more.”

The NBD-WG is being launched to address both the opportunities and problems of Big Data. The Group is charged with developing over the coming months a consensus definition, taxonomy, reference architecture, and technology roadmap for Big Data that can be embraced by all sectors.
