We admit it. When it comes to technology, it isn’t always easy to know what’s going on under the Big White Dome – or even if the federal government has any ideas about technology at all. But here’s a good place to start.

It’s the website for the NITRD Program. That’s the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program, for all you folks who like to have their acronyms elucidated. The NITRD Program is the nation’s “primary source of federally funded revolutionary breakthroughs in advanced information technologies such as computing, networking, and software.”

According to its website, the NITRD Program seeks to:

  • Provide research and development foundations for assuring continued U.S. technological leadership in advanced networking, computing systems, software, and associated information technologies;
  • Provide research and development foundations for meeting the needs of the Federal government for advanced networking, computing systems, software, and associated information technologies;
  • Accelerate development and deployment of these technologies in order to maintain world leadership in science and engineering; enhance national defense and national and homeland security; improve U.S. productivity and competitiveness and promote long-term economic growth; improve the health of the U.S. citizenry; protect the environment; improve education, training, and lifelong learning; and improve the quality of life.

Recently, NITRD invited submissions on its National Privacy Research Strategy. Specifically, NITRD asked for input on the privacy objectives that would inform the strategy. The strategy will emphasize “research directions for privacy-enhancing technologies, designs, and methods to enable privacy-preserving information systems.”  Given the importance of privacy in the Internet world, this is no small matter.

The deadline for this round of submissions was October 17. You can access the submissions at the National Privacy Research Strategy page of the NITRD website.

This Request for Information was the first part of the development of the National Privacy Research Strategy, a process likely to take a few months. There may be additional opportunities to comment once NITRD has developed a draft or preliminary research strategy.

To stay informed and make your voice heard, check back at the NITRD website in the coming months.
