Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with Senator Young (R-IN) and a bipartisan group of 10 other Senators, has reintroduced legislation that would authorize $100 billion in new funding for the National Science Foundation and make the agency responsible for maintaining the country’s global leadership in innovation.

Called the Endless Frontier Act, this bill was introduced late last year. Government watchers have been expecting its reintroduction in the new Senate.

Like the original bill, the reintroduced act again proposes a new technology development directorate, now named the “Directorate of Technology and Innovation”.   The new bill also focuses on these key technology areas:

  • artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other software advances;
  • high performance computing, semiconductors, and advanced computer hardware;
  • quantum computing and information systems;
  • robotics, automation, and advanced manufacturing;
  • natural and anthropogenic disaster prevention or mitigation;
  • advanced communications technology;
  • biotechnology, genomics, and synthetic biology;
  • cybersecurity, data storage, and data management technologies;
  • advanced energy, batteries, and industrial efficiency;
  • advanced materials science, engineering, and exploration relevant to the other key technology focus areas.
