The National Science Board (NSB) has elected Daniel Reed, a leader in the computing and IT research community, as its next Chair.
The NSB oversees the operations of the National Science Foundation (NSF). And, according to the board’s website, it “identifies issues that are critical to NSF’s future, approves NSF’s strategic budget directions and the annual budget submission to the Office of Management and Budget, and approves new major programs and awards.”
The NSB also serves as, “an independent body of advisors to the President and Congress on policy matters related to science and engineering and education in science and engineering.”
Reed is a former Board Chair of the Computing Research Association and currently serves on the organization’s Government Affairs Committee. Reed’s election to the NSB Chair is in line with NSF’s focus on emerging technologies, the creation of the new Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP), and the pending NSF legislation in Congress.
