In its ongoing program to connect Science and Government, the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) will be placing Big Data experts in Federal agencies.
This latest effort is part of AAAS’s Science and Technology Fellowship Program. AAAS expects to place up to 15 Big Data and Analytics Fellows in congressional and executive branch offices. Fellows will hold a PhD or an equivalent doctoral-level degree in a scientific or engineering disciple or a master’s degree in engineering with three years of professional experience. The program is only open to U.S. citizens.
AAAS sees this program as a great opportunity for computer scientists to help policymakers better understand the federal policy and regulatory issues from a technological perspective. Key policy issues for Big Data and Analytics Policy Fellows could include:
- Data governance for big data analytics projects
- Data privacy and security
- Safeguards against data misuse
- Innovation
- Infrastructure
- Integrity
- Ethics of intelligent information systems
- Public benefits of big data
